The Māori are the indigenous people of New Zealand. In the traditional Māori culture, there is a sacred custom of tattooing. The tattoos, which are known as Tā Moko in Māori, are applied to the face and buttocks of men, and to the chin and lips of women. The Māori see Tā Moko as a symbol of status and power that serves as a connection between an individual and his family as well as his cultural identity, similar to a nobleman’s emblem.

The newborn silver fern, which is referred to Koru in Māori, is one of the most significant cultural totems of the tribe. Denoting a new beginning, hope, harmony, and creation, the outer coil of the Koru symbolises growth and conveys the idea of perpetual movement, while the inner coil suggests a return to the point of origin.

Inspired by the totem tattoos worn by Māori women, INITIAL  incorporates the Koru into the design, producing a sophisticated knitwear series overflowing with tribal aesthetics that includes cardigans, pullovers and skirts. The team also takes inspiration from Māori weaving patterns, enriching its design of coats, sweaters, and skirts with raw, artistic colors.
